May is named after Maia, the goddess of the spring to the ancient Greeks and Romans. The Anglo-Saxons called this month Thrimilce (three times milking) because cows could be milked three times a day after feeding on the rich May grass! For the ancient Celtic people, the first of May was the first day of summer.
